Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible substance that tells your skin to produce collagen. After a series of treatments, collagen fibers rebuild and strengthen the skin’s foundation—improving firmness, restoring lost volume, and softening wrinkles.

Results appear gradually over several months and can last up to two years or longer.

Sculptra involves several injections in the mid and lower face. The product is mixed with lidocaine to enhance comfort during treatment. You can expect immediate volume/swelling that subsides in 2-3 days. Bruising is a potential side effect of any injectable. After treatment, you can plan to avoid exercise and excessive heat for 24 hours. You will be instructed to perform a gentle facial massage for several days after. Results are subtle and begin to develop over several weeks.

Sculptra is typically done in a series of 3 sessions, spaced 6 weeks apart. The number of sessions may vary on the individual and their desired aesthetic results.

Traditional fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is designed to restore volume upon injection. HA fillers last between 9-24 months, depending on the product used. Sculptra is a gradual restoration that works by stimulating your own body to produce collagen over time. Results last 2+ years (at which point a maintenance session may be desired).

Think of Sculptra like planting the seeds of a garden – it takes a little bit of time to bloom, but results come from within as new collagen develops.  HA fillers are like planting a flower that’s already bloomed. Beautiful and immediate- however, they may need maintenance sooner.
